Architecture is inspired by all types of things – shapes from nature, eras in history, foreign cultures – but the newest trend in hotel design is really getting me steamed. Spa design in hotel rooms is the latest incorporation of the spa-world into our daily lives. A stunning example of this fusion is the Tcherassi Hotel + Spa in Cartagena, Colombia, a first-time collaboration between Colombian fashion icon Silvia Tcherassi and the Miami-based CF Hospitality. Lush, gorgeous rooms (there are only seven of them in the whole hotel) are adorned in lovely pastels, soft wood accents, and hints of glass and mirror, to truly convey the spa-within-a-room aesthetic. Sundecks, soaking tubs, double sinks, and rainshower fixtures are just some of the features available in-room at Tcherassi’s paradise resort.
A closer option is Chicago’s Ruby Room. Unlike most hotels, whose spa component is either an amenity or an afterthought, the Ruby Room is a spa first, featuring overnight accommodations as a luxurious convenience to guests, allowing them to continue their spa experience throughout their stay. And what the Ruby Room lacks in Tcherassi’s opulence, it certainly makes up for in attention to bliss. Each of the eight guest rooms are self-described “to evoke a feeling of relaxation and comfort,” complete with 500 thread count linens, in-room steam showers, Aveda hair and body products, and beautiful architectural and design features, including hardwood floors and oriental rugs. All guests can access a private healing garden and waterfall, for an added element of repose. A magical haven for the spa lover, and the purveyor of a trend we are bound to see more of in the coming year.
While certainly not your typical hotel experience, spa-inspired room design will undoubtedly change the face of the hospitality industry, providing an opportunity to indulge guests with the highest possible levels of relaxation and luxury, with absolutely no compromise. Steam shower in my room? Yes please!
