Another Epic Hangover? Steam it Away

We’re now more than half way through the month of January; for many of us, that means we bailed on our New Year’s resolution to curb our alcohol intake for the year about a week, week-and-a-half ago. As a result, 2011 is well on its way to being yet another year of imbibing great beers, wines and liquors, and also a year of suffering epic hangovers that will make us want to curl up in a tiny little ball and die. So what do you do when Advil, ramen noodles and that old wives’ tale – hair of the dog – fail to make you feel better? Not to worry – just steam your hangover away.

That’s right – nasty hangovers, caused by a number of factors associated with drinking alcohol including the dehydrating effects of ethanol in the alcohol, chemical reactions which impair the liver’s ability to produce glucose to feed the body and brain, and congeners produced during fermentation that exaggerate hangover symptoms, can all be quelled by a gentle steam bath. How is this possible you ask? There are two primary reasons why.

Reason one is that steam causes you to sweat. When you drink alcohol, you are introducing numerous toxins into the body – toxins that are responsible for causing your unwanted hangover. Until these toxins have been removed from your body, you will continue to feel the negative effects. Sweating is the body’s natural method of detoxification and sitting in a steam shower for 15 to 20 minutes will open your pores and accelerate the process by which you purge the bad stuff. Some will argue that steaming dehydrates the body and therefore is not a good hangover cure, but all it takes is downing a few glasses of water before and after the steam session to avoid that.

Reason two is that steam helps you relax. One of the many annoying symptoms of a hangover, in addition to headaches, nausea and fatigue, is restlessness caused by increased anxiety. A steam bath environment warms muscles and tissues, calms the mind and allows the whole body to relax. All of that in addition to sweating out toxins and there is hardly a more perfect cure for a hangover. Still not convinced? Take cue from the Europeans.

In places like the Russia, which Forbes ranks as one of Europe’s biggest drinking nations, steam rooms are not only regularly utilized for quelling hangovers, but they are the preferred cure. Same goes for many booze-loving Scandinavian countries including Sweden, Finland and Denmark, where steam rooms are available aplenty.

For healthy individuals who have experience with steam rooms and do not have any pre-existing medical conditions that could be exacerbated by steam and heat, steaming is definitely an option to consider for curing that epic hangover.

The preceding statements about the effects of steam on hangovers have not been medically evaluated. Additionally, the statements are not intended to be an endorsement for consuming alcoholic beverages. Always consult your physician before engaging in activities where heat and steam are utilized.
