The Spa has Gone to the Dogs

Monday, August 24th, 2009

C-A Doggie Spa PackThe Spa has gone to the dogs … literally. On a visit to a new groomer I was asked if I wanted the Spa package for my dog. I was somewhat surprised, but with doggie hotels, resorts, even an airline for pets, it was only a matter of time before spas started to cater to our pampered pooches. I have the pleasure of owning a high maintenance dog with sensitive skin so I went for it. She was lathered in an organic botanical shampoo and conditioner, followed by a gentle facial scrub to rejuvenate and remove dead skin cells. Then a paw-dicure consisting of a moisturizing paw rub and nail trim for those rough paw pads and nails. Doggie spas are popping up everywhere. The Ritzy Canine Carriage House in New York specializes in Fascia Released, Hydro & Acupressure Massage. The D Pets Hotel in Hollywood, CA features luxury modern suites and an upscale spa for the ultimate in pampering. For the budget conscious, there are plenty of spa products available for owners to give their dogs a spa treatment at home.

Here are some pictures of our happy dog, back from the spa:

“Addicted To Beauty” Medical Spa TV Show

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

Addicted To BeautyThe Oxygen channel has debuted a new reality show which airs Tuesdays at 10pm titled “Addicted to Beauty“. The show features the staff of a medical spa in La Jolla, California Changes Plastic Surgery and Spa and has been dubbed a “dramedy”, part drama, part comedy, on the show’s website.

As the show chronicles the med spa we see this venture unfold between Dianne York-Goldman, a socialite and marketing guru who has teamed up with well-known plastic surgeon Dr. Gilbert Lee; an over-the-top group of employees including Gary, the flamboyant and outspoken receptionist; Ronnie, the eccentric concierge; Natasha, Dianne’s levelheaded assistant; and Shannyn, the whip-cracking spa manager and Dr. Lee’s no-nonsense office manager.

So far the show has not received high marks with its critics, such as the LA Times who is quoted bashing the show:

“Revolving around a La Jolla spa, the Oxygen series can seem less a reality show than an infomercial.”

“If American pop culture had a garage sale, it would look something like Oxygen’s “Addicted to Beauty.””

Negative reviews seem to be the norm for this show early on, but with Oxygen’s large audience of women maybe this type of show will be helpful to women who are looking for real life examples of a Medical Spa.

As we discussed in a previous entry, Medical Spas are a growing trend and yet many are unsure whether they should go to a Medical Spa or a Hospital for their treatment, how to research a Medi Spa, what services these spas provide and how these business are run. Maybe this TV show will answer some of these important questions for the community, while providing an inside look for an emerging industry.

The Arrival of The Airport Spa!

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Airport SpaOne thing I have never understood is why airports don’t have spas. None of the airports I’ve ever been to have extended this luxury and it seems crazy to me. You have a captive audience waiting for hours to catch their next flight with nothing to do except browse the duty free stores and overpriced souvenir shops. Not to mention the fact that half of them are exhausted and sore after spending hours in pretzel position after disembarking from their flight. I cannot tell you how many times I would have spent money I didn’t need to spend for a spa treatment while trapped at the airport. And now is my chance.

A company called XpresSpa is a premium class large scale, nationally structured spa that operates exclusively in airports. Some of their services include facials, full body massage, reflexology massages as well as a sinus and stress relief head massage. And for those with only an hour or so to spare, they offer manicures and pedicures too. They are open seven days a week and have two shifts: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.  XpresSpas are located at the San Francisco International Airport, JFK and LaGuardia airports in New York, Las Vegas McCarran International Airport, among others http://www.xpresspa.com. It’s genius.

Top 5 Odd Spa Treatments

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Wine SpaOver the years the spa industry has done a lot of things to diversify and stay competitive by adding more “different” kinds spa treatments to their menus. Here are just a few of our favorites:

5. Wine Soak Spa Treatment - Many of us enjoy drinking a glass of wine while we soak, but thanks to a growing trend that has spread to the US, now you can actually soak in wine!  You can choose to completely soak in a wine spa, or even get a wine or Champagne body scrub, foot soak or massage.

4. Pelvic Health Integrated Techniques - These spa treatments are all targeted at the female’s nether regions. Who knew there were spas devoted entirely to this? We wrote about Medical Spas a few days ago, and these types of spas are similar except they only focus on that one section of a woman. Some of the “rejuvenation” treatments include: Kegel Exercises, Electrical Stimulation, Nonsurgical Labial Contouring, Invasive Tightening Surgery, Reconstructive Surgery and more.

Snake Massage3. Warmed Golf Ball Massage - This is the first we’ve ever heard of this before, but apparently the Four Seasons’ spa in Scottsdale AZ has this crazy (yet delightful sounding?) spa treatment. Of course this treatment is designed for golfers who are looking to stay at the top of their game by alleviating tension and stiffness.

2. Snake Massage - Many women may cringe at the thought of a snake massage, but believe it or not there are spas that are actually using these slimy serpents to “relax” their spa goers. One such spa is Ada Barak’s spa in the town of Talmei Elazar in Israel where they use small snakes for places like the face for a lighter massage and bigger snakes for the deep tissue massage.

Gold Facial1. 24 Karat Gold Facial - Now this is a treatment we can get behind! Imagine living in the lap of luxury to the point where your facial is actually done with 24 Karat Gold! At the Veronica Spa in Malibu California, they use 24 Karat Gold, Gama PGA and Nano Mist technology to help lighten, brighten and hydrate your skin to leave it firmer and younger feeling. We don’t know if it works, but it sure is Odd!

Floating Saunas

Kaluga Floating Sauna

Kaluga Floating Sauna

I don’t know where, how or why this new phenomenon began, but it seems like the Floating Sauna just might be the next big trend in spa culture ;-) . Here’s the research that supports my hypothesis:

1) The Kaluga Floating Sauna: This sauna was designed by Finnish architecture firm Rintala Eggertsson for the festival of landscape objects, held in Russia in July 2008. The theme behind the festival was houses built on water. Their floating sauna, they said, could provide shelter for up to six people for several days. The Kaluga did make it down the Ugra river in Russia and later made it into a permanent Museum exhibit, before it reached its final state as a guest house.

2) SS Silla: This impressive floating sauna scored the title of World’s Fastest Floating Sauna at 18 MPH at Match Cup Sweden.

Chunky Monkey

3) Floating Sauna Company: A Canadian based family company that introduced the Chunky Monkey using two surplus fuel tanks from an F-18 fighter for flotation back in 1997. Although Company Owner Don Toporowski’s Floating Saunas have evolved, he still uses the Chunky Monkey. He says, “there is nothing better than taking a hot sauna session and then jumping off the rooftop diving platform into the cool lake water.”

Sally’s Spa Game Review

Spa Facial

Spa Facial

I was doing some research on the Spa Industry when I came across this fun little game called Sally’s Spa. Sally’s Spa gives everyone the chance to run their own spa! This game is really quite entertaining if you have some time to kill and has all kinds of fun tasks you need to complete such as manicures, facials, massages, tans and more. This game is free to play for an hour, but then you have to purchase it for $9.99 after that. The game’s characters look a bit like a Japanese animation, and are quite cute and entertaining.

Spa Pedicure

Spa Pedicure

The point of this game is to serve your spa’s customers and keep them happy so that you’ll get a good tip, and keep them as a return customer. In addition, you must try to stock your shelves so you can sell product, as well as buy new equipment so you can offer more services and faster service.

Spa Game

Spa Game

The game starts off by showing you what you are supposed to do, and then puts you to work. It is fairly easy in the beginning, but by the third level it gets challenging and I ended up making a few customers mad at that point, although I didn’t lose them as customers. The customers have different amounts of patience, based on what type of customer they are: Busy Mom, Athlete, Businessman, Bridezilla etc. You can give them a magazine, tea or even light different aromatherapy candles to alleviate their stress, much as in real life.

This game is quite enjoyable and I recommend taking the time to try out the free trial when you have an hour to kill. wvj683ifku
