The Steamshower Diet

Steam Shower DietWhen people talk about weight loss, a few things usually come to mind. Healthy eating, naturally. Exercise – of course. But what about steam? Could your waistline really benefit from stepping inside a shower? As it turns out – absolutely. Welcome to the Steam Shower Diet.

Unlike other weight loss trends, the Steam Shower Diet (catchy name, huh?) doesn’t concentrate on intake or workout. Its focus is purely biological. Fancy that – a diet that works from the inside out, instead of the outside in! And there’s no counting, no scales, no calculators, or charts to maintain. In fact, if you have a home spa, you’re probably already on it! But if you’re still thinking about whether to add that steam shower to the mix, here’s something to ponder. Can you think of any other home fixture that can make you feel relaxed and help you lose weight? Yeah, I didn’t think so Sub-Zero.

The Steam Shower Diet works with two main components of your body’s biology: metabolism and stress. Anyone familiar with the chemistry of weight loss knows how essential metabolism is to shedding the pounds. Slow metabolism can substantially deter weight loss, even when you’re eating sensibly. What’s an antidote to slow metabolism? Steam. Steam has been shown to boost metabolism by opening pores in the skin, allowing increased circulation in cells. The heat of a steam shower has an effect on the body that’s similar to sweating, removing residue and dirt from the skin, and allowing the body to essentially “breathe,” speeding up metabolism. All that from a little evaporated hot water!

Stress can also have a tremendous impact on our weight. When our bodies are anxious, tired, and unrelaxed, we react to the tension by releasing higher levels of cortisol, a chemical usually responsible for that annoying accumulation of weight around our middles. Now this one isn’t rocket science, but it bears explanation. Taking a steam shower = relaxation. Relaxation = less cortisol released by our bodies. Less cortisol released by our bodies = a chance at weight loss! (And this is coming from someone who was never great at math.)

But that’s not all! The Steam Shower Diet also does little things, all of which can directly or indirectly assist in weight loss. Steam acts as a muscle relaxant, which, on top of alleviating stress on your body, can make exercise easier to tackle. And the respiratory benefits of steam can ease breathing, another important component of stress relief and exercise. Sorry, what was that, frozen meal in a box?

So if you’re looking for something a little different and a lot healthy, try the Steam Shower Diet. Ooh, I think I’m gonna diet right now.

Whirlpool Tub

Whirlpool Tub & Steam Shower

According to Remodeling Magazine’s 2008 – 2009 Cost. Vs. Value Report, a bathroom remodel will still recoup up to 75 percent of the cost upon resale – making it a wise renovation investment. So for those who have dreamed of soothing jetted bathtubs, vertical spa showers and a complete steam shower environment it might be wise to implement these amenities into the home and save on repeated trips to the spa.

Another interesting piece of information that Remodeling Magazine cited is that bathrooms are among the easiest remodels to achieve using “green” practices and products, from eco-friendly materials like ceramic tile to luxurious, water-conserving fixtures and low energy-consumption lighting. However, what are some of the most important fixtures to choose for your bathroom remodel? And which ones will prove to be the most attractive to potential buyers in the long run?

According to a recent story in The Orlando Sentinel, features that increase a bathroom’s appeal include larger showers with rain showerheads, steam showers, body sprays, heated floors and hinged glass doors or partial shower walls. Also, soaking tubs instead of Jacuzzis, more windows and skylights to let in sunlight, and more efficient, quieter ventilation. Disappearing is the elaborate decking that raised tubs several steps above the floor, making access difficult and even dangerous. So even if you are waiting to sell until the market improves, a luxury bathroom renovation is something you can enjoy both now and when you get the money back when you sell the home in years to come.

Green Spas

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

The phrase green spa sounds like an oxymoron. After all, this is the type of facility that capitalizes from its use of water – be it steam, soaking tubs, elaborate whirlpool baths or saunas. However, these days spas are turning over a new leaf – a new and greener leaf, that is. Here is our sampling of spas that showcase new and innovative ways to conserve water and other precious natural resources:

El Monte Sagrado Living Resort and Spa, Taos, New Mexico

El Monte Sagrado Living Resort and Spa, Taos, New Mexico

New Mexico’s El Monte Sagrado Living Resort and Spa features the “Living Machine,” a water recycling system that is designed to filter waste water through pools that are rich with fish, plants and other natural filters. The end result is reclaimed water that is used to irrigate botanical gardens and landscaping, including herbs, vegetables and exotic fruits that are served at the property’s restaurant.

Titanic Spa in Linthwaite, England – located in Yorkshire, has tackled the serious issues of energy use, water waste, and the building’s carbon footprint. Photovoltaic panels and a biomass generator burning wood chippings from industry waste are topped up if need be with the purchase of 100 percent renewable energy.
