The phrase green spa sounds like an oxymoron. After all, this is the type of facility that capitalizes from its use of water – be it steam, soaking tubs, elaborate whirlpool baths or saunas. However, these days spas are turning over a new leaf – a new and greener leaf, that is. Here is our sampling of spas that showcase new and innovative ways to conserve water and other precious natural resources:

El Monte Sagrado Living Resort and Spa, Taos, New Mexico

New Mexico’s El Monte Sagrado Living Resort and Spa features the “Living Machine,” a water recycling system that is designed to filter waste water through pools that are rich with fish, plants and other natural filters. The end result is reclaimed water that is used to irrigate botanical gardens and landscaping, including herbs, vegetables and exotic fruits that are served at the property’s restaurant.

Titanic Spa in Linthwaite, England – located in Yorkshire, has tackled the serious issues of energy use, water waste, and the building’s carbon footprint. Photovoltaic panels and a biomass generator burning wood chippings from industry waste are topped up if need be with the purchase of 100 percent renewable energy.
