Pet Friendly Spas

Thursday, October 9th, 2014

As you can tell from our previous post, spas have gone to the dogs. Literally. We’re talking gourmet pet menus, custom canine walking trails, and puppy massages.

Enter the latest trend in the world of relaxation – pet-friendly spas. And why the woof not! If a dog is a man’s best friend, doesn’t it make sense that you’d want to share all the comforts and Zen of a spa experience with your BFF? We definitely think so. And we’re not alone.

Spas and hotels around the country are quickly becoming havens for both two- and four-footed creatures. And we’re not just talking about resorts that allow pets to stay in their owners’ rooms. These spots have our tails positively wagging with pet perks. Vermont’s Stoweflake Mountain Resort and Spa is the perfect place for the active pup (and their human). Located on 60 acres of beautiful terrain, doggies go nuts for the Stowe Rec Path, a five mile trail through the property’s woods and farmland, complete with stops at swimming holes so Rover can cool off. The hotel’s rooms and townhouses are pleased to welcome canine guests, giving the furrier amongst us a spot to relax while you take in the spa and four-star dining at Stoweflake.

But if you’re looking to pause your paws and enjoy some pampering in the great indoors, La Quinta Resort & Club just outside of Palm Springs, California is the place to go. On the menu: an hour-long relaxation massage for your dog…or the opportunity to enjoy a “Pupples Massage,” where you can receive treatment at the same time as your pet, from your guest room! La Quinta’s mission isn’t just about on-the-spot relaxation; they take interested owners through the steps of the canine massage, showing you how to implement techniques they practice at the resort.

Back on the east coast, at the Inn by the Sea in Crescent Beach, Maine, it’s a toss up as to whether their furry guests get even better treatment their tail-less clients. The stunning property is like a coastal vision from a storybook. And with their “INNcredible Pets” package, the picture perfect scene gets even better. You get two nights in one of their gorgeous suites; Fido gets an Inn by the Sea dog bowl, a personalized LL Bean puppy bed, a 30-minute in-room doggie massage, selections from their gourmet pet menu, and nightly pet turndown service (featuring, of course, a locally made seasonal dog treat). Cue lots of slobbering.

And, if you happen to be more of a cat person (we did NOT say Cat Lady. Those were your words.), never fear…the pet-friendly spa world loves you too! Like The Shores Resort & Spa in Daytona Beach, whose spacious rooms open their arms to dogs and cats alike, even offer massage services for both pups and kitties. (And if your little Garfield will stay on a leash, you can even walk your cat around the lobby!).

So next time you’re wondering, “To board, or not to board?”, pack up the water dishes and BYOP (that’s, Bring Your Own Pet) along to the spa. We know they’ll love it as much as you do. (Disclaimer: we cannot be held responsible for excessive amounts of purring or puppy kisses due to exposure to relaxing pet spa experiences.)

Steam Therapy: A Natural Way to Soothe a Nasty Cold or Flu

sneezing man

‘Tis the season for many things; some good, some not so good. Of the latter, nasty, debilitating colds and flus that clog your sinuses and congest your chest are among the least desirable “gifts” of the season. For some, reaching for a few tablets of Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Medicine, or other over-the-counter medication, is the first line of defense against unwanted cold or flu symptoms. However, in this day and age of progression towards more natural remedies, you always have the option of turning to the benefits of steam therapy to relieve the symptoms of your cold or flu.

Although steaming is a remedy that can be accomplished in the confines of a home bathroom steam shower, it is hardly a one that can be written off as an old wives tale. The benefits of a warm steam shower to someone who is suffering from a cold cannot be overstated; steam vapor that enters the lungs and the sinuses is the ultimate natural way to promote expectoration (coughing) and relax the breath. Congestion is caused by a combination of inflammation of the air passages in your lungs and build-up of phlegm in your chest. Steam relaxes and opens up these passages, allowing air to move more freely through them. Medical professionals typically recommend that you spend about 10 to 15 minutes in a steam shower, up to three times per day, when you have a cold or flu. Your children and toddlers with colds or flus can also benefit from a steam shower as long as you get into the steam shower with them to supervise. Additionally, both you and your children can benefit from aromatherapy essential oils introduced into the steam process; eucalyptus, rosemary, lavender and others specific oils can significantly help to boost the effectiveness of steam treatment. If you don’t have a steam shower in your home, you can try to steam in your regular shower, but unfortunately, a regular shower in lieu of a steam shower will not generate the same intensity of steam that a severe cold or flu requires. A company like ThermaSol, that’s been bringing steam showers into their customers’ homes for over 50 years, offers you leading steam technology and the only 100% digital networked steam systems in the world – the safest and most reliable steam technology. Boasting features like FastStart™ steam in seconds, and providing constant steam at a constant rate, a ThermaSol steam shower will provide you with a professional quality steam experience in the comfort of your own home.

Contracting a cold or flu can easily be the most dreadful experience you have all year. Incorporating steam therapy into your cold and flu relief regimen can go a long way towards helping you breathe easy and get well faster.

Another Epic Hangover? Steam it Away

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

hungover woman

We’re now more than half way through the month of January; for many of us, that means we bailed on our New Year’s resolution to curb our alcohol intake for the year about a week, week-and-a-half ago. As a result, 2011 is well on its way to being yet another year of imbibing great beers, wines and liquors, and also a year of suffering epic hangovers that will make us want to curl up in a tiny little ball and die. So what do you do when Advil, ramen noodles and that old wives’ tale – hair of the dog – fail to make you feel better? Not to worry – just steam your hangover away.

That’s right – nasty hangovers, caused by a number of factors associated with drinking alcohol including the dehydrating effects of ethanol in the alcohol, chemical reactions which impair the liver’s ability to produce glucose to feed the body and brain, and congeners produced during fermentation that exaggerate hangover symptoms, can all be quelled by a gentle steam bath. How is this possible you ask? There are two primary reasons why.

The Steamshower Diet

Steam Shower DietWhen people talk about weight loss, a few things usually come to mind. Healthy eating, naturally. Exercise – of course. But what about steam? Could your waistline really benefit from stepping inside a shower? As it turns out – absolutely. Welcome to the Steam Shower Diet.

Unlike other weight loss trends, the Steam Shower Diet (catchy name, huh?) doesn’t concentrate on intake or workout. Its focus is purely biological. Fancy that – a diet that works from the inside out, instead of the outside in! And there’s no counting, no scales, no calculators, or charts to maintain. In fact, if you have a home spa, you’re probably already on it! But if you’re still thinking about whether to add that steam shower to the mix, here’s something to ponder. Can you think of any other home fixture that can make you feel relaxed and help you lose weight? Yeah, I didn’t think so Sub-Zero.

The Steam Shower Diet works with two main components of your body’s biology: metabolism and stress. Anyone familiar with the chemistry of weight loss knows how essential metabolism is to shedding the pounds. Slow metabolism can substantially deter weight loss, even when you’re eating sensibly. What’s an antidote to slow metabolism? Steam. Steam has been shown to boost metabolism by opening pores in the skin, allowing increased circulation in cells. The heat of a steam shower has an effect on the body that’s similar to sweating, removing residue and dirt from the skin, and allowing the body to essentially “breathe,” speeding up metabolism. All that from a little evaporated hot water!

Stress can also have a tremendous impact on our weight. When our bodies are anxious, tired, and unrelaxed, we react to the tension by releasing higher levels of cortisol, a chemical usually responsible for that annoying accumulation of weight around our middles. Now this one isn’t rocket science, but it bears explanation. Taking a steam shower = relaxation. Relaxation = less cortisol released by our bodies. Less cortisol released by our bodies = a chance at weight loss! (And this is coming from someone who was never great at math.)

But that’s not all! The Steam Shower Diet also does little things, all of which can directly or indirectly assist in weight loss. Steam acts as a muscle relaxant, which, on top of alleviating stress on your body, can make exercise easier to tackle. And the respiratory benefits of steam can ease breathing, another important component of stress relief and exercise. Sorry, what was that, frozen meal in a box?

So if you’re looking for something a little different and a lot healthy, try the Steam Shower Diet. Ooh, I think I’m gonna diet right now.
